  I first saw Dr Elphinstone about 2 years ago. I had a problem in my throat. Dr Elphinstone had already looked at my scans and knew exactly what needed to be done to rectify the matter. He explained the procedure thoroughly but because the problem was close to my voicebox I decided I would not have the operation until I retired in 4 years time. My job relies on my voice and there was some risk of damage. I again saw Dr Elphinstone a few months ago because the problem was now worse and I no longer wanted to wait until retirement to get it fixed. All the time Dr Elphinstone was attentive, polite and at times humorous but he described every detail of the procedure, recovery and risks. The operation did not go to plan as it took much longer than anticipated due mainly to the size of the defect which showed up smaller in the scans. I was in hospital for a few days more and recovered faster and better than expected. Dr Elphinstone visited me twice daily during my stay in hospital and he responded quickly when the hospital nurses and intern had problems getting my feeding tube to work. All in all I found Dr Elphinstone to be a wonderful surgeon who is very confident in his abilities without being cocky. I was comfortable with him every step of the way. The operation was a complete success and I am recovering well 2 weeks following surgery.
